Refitech has introduced a lightweight carbon fiber handle for the new guide dog leash, which is produced using vacuum bags in a closed-form autoclave process using prepreg.
The leash was developed by the NPK Design Company in Leiden at the request of the Royal Dutch Guide Dog Foundation. The new handle weighs less than 50% of the previous metal handle, significantly improving the comfort of the dog and owner. The design incorporates several novel features inspired by kiteboarding equipment and motorsport technology, while its reflective finish enhances the dog's visibility during walking.
The guide dog's leash and handle are critical to signaling when helping the owner avoid obstacles and pass the road. Since the NPK team added a ridge to the design, the handle is inserted in place with a loud "beep", which is very useful for visually impaired users. Once installed on the leash, the carbon fiber handle "floats" over the back of the guide dog, making it easier for the owner to find the position. The leash itself is made of leather and is the most wear-resistant material.
Janwillem Bouwknegt, one of NPK's chief designers, said: “We are very honored when the Royal Dutch Guide Dog Foundation asked us to help them design a new guide dog leash. It was a lot of time with dog owners and guide dog trainers. After the meeting, we chose carbon fiber to make the handle, mainly because of the high rigidity and light weight of the carbon fiber. This in turn means that we must find a supplier that can produce a series of small-scale carbon fiber components at a reasonable cost, and previously worked with Refitech. Cooperation, so they are our first choice."
Refitech sales engineer Bas Nijpels added: "NPK is at the forefront of the conceptual design and functionality of the new traction belt. Our role in this process is to focus on the production aspects of the handle as well as prototyping and material procurement. Thanks to the Royal Dutch Guide The Blind Dog Foundation is a non-profit organization that relies on donations, and we know that costs must be kept to a minimum. After optimizing the design to facilitate demolding and use of prepregs, we now offer new handles at very favorable prices. Thanks to our production facilities in China."
